FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

REGARDING NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATIONS

This is a method of measuring thinking and memory abilities in a standardized, objective manner. The tests are part of a process beginning with a referral question, where the client receives individualized attention from Dr. Neufeld and his staff, who collect relevant history, conduct interviews, administer tests, interpret the tests and provide recommendations. These results and recommendations are personally shared with the client and others selected by that individual in a feedback session conducted by Dr. Neufeld, and in a written report to the client’s referring source.

In many cases, a healthcare provider, including primary care physicians, neurologists, or psychiatrists will suggest it, when answers to the above questions are needed. Elder care and probate attorneys also make similar referrals on behalf of their clients.

Others who can benefit include those who have suffered stroke, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and closed head injury. Individuals who have concerns about their thinking abilities and/or memory can benefit. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a common problem that is often unrecognized and can be addressed by this type of evaluation.

Dr. Neufeld has found that anyone, especially age 50+, can benefit from testing to establish a baseline assessment of cognitive performance, which can be re-evaluated over time. Strengths, as well as weaknesses, may be highlighted.

After an initial interview with Dr. Neufeld, the client is scheduled for three to six hours of testing, depending on individual circumstances. Testing is administered in Dr. Neufeld’s office by one of his on-staff technicians.

The cost varies, depending on the hours of testing required; Dr. Neufeld’s office assistant can discuss that with you. Insurance plans accepted include Medicare and Kaiser. Please ask about others; private pay is also accepted.

Referrals may be recommended, as necessary, to your primary care physician as a follow-up to the testing.

Common questions from clients, family members, healthcare and legal professionals which may be answered by the testing process include: Do I have a memory or thinking problem? Is my memory normal for my age? Why do I lose track of what I’m doing? Why am I having trouble with names and words? If I have a memory problem, what can be done? Could I benefit from memory medication? Can I still maintain my independent living arrangement? Can I still drive safely? Can I manage medications and make sound financial decisions? What other issues may be interfering with my memory and thinking abilities? What kind of help do I, or my family member, need? Do I have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder?
Dr. Neufeld is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been serving clients in Colorado Springs, and southern Colorado, for over 20 years. He was staff psychologist at the Penrose Hospital rehabilitation program for 15 years and entered private practice in 2005.

Information about your thinking and memory abilities, and recommendations regarding your personal situation.

Treatments, including medications, are recommended to your primary care physician for their consideration as adjuncts to your treatment plan

Follow-up testing is encouraged in some cases to track changes in abilities and to provide important information to clients, their families, and health care providers.
